The living quarters of Adelaide de Menil, a photographer and an heir to the Schlumberger  oilfield-services fortune, and her husband, Edmund Carpenter, an  anthropologist and author — a 1770’s house joined to an 1820 barn in East Hampton— and other  structures that make up one of the most beguiling residential compounds  in the country. After buying the land in 1973, de Menil and Carpenter  began to acquire and restore 18th- and 19th-century houses and barns  from the area, 14 in all. And now, having lovingly  amassed these structures, the couple are giving them away. - NYT
